SOHIO  Handicap Trophy Race

This  year the  SOHIO  was a handicap race, the slowest qualifier starting first
105  miles  7 laps of a 15 mile course John Saun had  all  but  won  the  Sohio
race  or  looking at  the official speed  was tied  for first with Eucker but on the
safety  lap  while  trying to free up a stuck fuel selector valve, Saun lost altitude
and  officials  disqualified  for low  and  hazardous flying. Other  pilots flew  as
low or lower, but Saun's aircraft had the evidence of tree strikes on the wings.

The Tinnerman Products Company attempted to return the races to International
participation  by reserving  five of  the ten starting  positions  for  foreign entries.
Unfortunately  there were no  foreign entries this year. The race was open to any
type  of  aircraft with less than 2850 cu. in. displacement. This  race turned out to
furnish the fans with the the closest finish of the three day meet, by 0.44 seconds.

The relatively new Goodyear Race attracted 39 entries this year, qualifying
trials reduced this number  to  21 starters. Four  elimination  heats and two
semi-finals reduced the field to the 8  best in the Labor Day final race. The
new 2 mile course would be on the airfield directly in front of the grandstand
in full view of the crowd. Pylons would be mounted on trucks and driven into
place  at  the  time of the  race. Performance of  the best the planes was so
closely  matched  that  the only  big  difference  was there  rate  on  take off.
Old timers who gave up the high speed racers did very well,  racers built by
Tony LeVier,  Steve Wittman and Art Chester monopolized six of the seven
 top money positions

Ten  starters  were again  lined up on the whitewashed line in the grass, another
hair razing effort  to get off, get the wheels up and get to the scatter pylon before
the  next guy. Five of  the  ten starters were using a blend of alcohol triptane fuel
that produced record breaking qualifying speeds this year. However, almost like
last  year only  three of the ten starters  would finish the race. Chuck Brown flying
Cobra II  the 1946  P-39  winner who  qualified  at 418.300 mph  and led the field
for 18 laps  with a victory and a new record almost in his grasp had to land when
his   engine  began  to  loose power,   Becker and  Cleland  flying identical F2G
Corsair's  both  were out  early  when their engine  back-fire tore  the  air scoops
loose  which could  have  come through the windscreen. Robert Eucker went out
on lap 6, M W Fairbrother was out on lap 13, next lap, 14 saw Edmondson retire,
Walling  in  the bronze #37 came down on lap 18 followed by Brown who finished
the  18th lap.  Anson Johnson who started in 4th position and one of the five who
also  used  the  triptane,  won at  a  speed of 383.767. Bruce Raymond flying the
"Galloping Ghost" took yet another 2nd place. he third place finisher, sometimes
called  the "old timer" was Vincent Newhall flying his 19th National Air Race who
also served as a General in the Indiana Air National Guard.
